We all know as either parents ourselves or thinking back to our own childhood how quickly an accident can happen. A slip down the stairs, trip over a toy or cut from a knife can happen in a matter of seconds and yet it can also only take a minute to prevent.
Azaria and Lindam, the UK’s number one home safety brand held the first Safety Day on September 6th in order to highlight to parents the number of accidents involving children that are still happening in the home. Shockingly, more accidents happen at home than anywhere else and more children die annually because of accidents rather than illnesses, such as meningitis. Safety Day was launched as Lindam is committed to reducing childhood accidents in the home and we devised the theme ‘The Difference A Minute Can Make’ to look at how time pressured parents could be risking their child’s health.
We worked with key bloggers and issued them with a challenge to show how quickly and easily Lindam safety equipment can be fitted in the home, ran a series of high-profile competitions on key parenting websites and ran a report with 2,000 mums to highlight the time pressures they face as modern-day parents. The results showed that hectic lifestyles meant that seven in ten mums are forced to regularly leave their children to play unsupervised while carrying out household chores and 40 per cent of parents admit their child has been injured around the house while they themselves were busy cooking, cleaning and juggling aspects of domestic life. These findings quite clearly support the need for preventative safety measures to help parents and their demanding lives.
Lindam also heavily involved their Facebook fans by polling them throughout the day and highlighting key points from the survey in the days and weeks leading up to Safety Day. The day was a resounding success and we look forward to carrying on this important work with Safety Day 2013.
